I don’t remember if I’ve posted this photo before so here it is. This is the infamous Gold Cup coffee shop circa 1973. Notice the Christmas decorations along the sidewalk indicating the time of year. Also, the awning on the far left of the photo covered a newstand where questionable material of many different kinds could be purchased. The Gold Cup closed in the late 70′s but the building still stands with its tenant being a tattoo shop now. Thanks to several readers who have sent this photo to me.

This poem was contributed by reader “Baz” over a year ago. Somehow I missed it then but have found it through my editing. I’ve done almost 80 chapters now and I’m moving forward.

What is this life if, full of need,
We have no time to stop and read.

No time to rest beneath the sheets,
And pause to think of kids on streets.

No time to see, what love there is,
When kids form friendships. Oh, what bliss.

No time to see, in light of day,
What joy there is, in kids at play.

No time to turn at Squeegy’s glance,
And watch his body, how it can dance.

No time to wait til his mouth can,
Enrich that smile his eyes began.

A poor life this, if full of need,
We have no time to stop and read.

About those six boys who live on the street,
not even a parent to give them a treat.
With only themselves to tuck into bed,
always awaiting that kiss on the head.
Still they get by day after day,
inside that garage with the games that they play.

Some Lucky Charms and ice cold milk too,
they ask eachother just what should we do?
Have a nice day in the sun at the beach,
or to that woman’s house where she’s ready to teach?
Maybe Miss Moon and her mysterious ways,
or wait for Leroy Reed, he hasn’t been there for days.

Sometimes they may sell themselves on the street,
just so that they can make ends meet.
Sitting in the garage where they feel safe at last,
hoping that boy’s shift finishes fast.

Its such a shame they have to live this way,
they should live for the moment and not for the day.
So while your at home all cozy in bed,
And mum kisses you goodnight on the head.
Or when you’re playing with all your toys,
all i ask is that you think of those boys.

This doesn’t mean that they don’t have a good time,
sitting on the beach and playing in the sunshine.
Playing games with bits of Lucky Charms,
Making up games didn’t do anyone harm.

Seeing Dr. Yorke to make them well again at last,
cooking with Miss Moon while the time goes past.
And While Juniper fills them right up to the brim,
or tells them a story while she gives them a trim.
Crazy Mike’s stories going late into the night,
one or two might just give you a fright.

Although these moments are good and are true,
there just aren’t enough, yet they still make do.

Its still such a shame they have to live this way,
they should live for the moment and not for the day.
So while your at home all cozy in bed,
And mum kisses you goodnight on the head.
Or when you’re playing with all your toys,
all i ask is that you think of those boys.

For no one should be made to live life this way,
they should have the freedom to be carefree and play.

For me this is a story that I somehow have to tell. Times are hard for many of us right now and the donations however large or small are being used to survive.
